1. Dozens missing after Colombian boat sinks

A tourist boat packed with about 160 passengers for the holiday weekend capsized* on Sunday on a reservoir near the Colombian city of Medellin, leaving at least nine people dead and 31 missing, officials said.

Rescuers including firefighters and air force pilots in helicopters searched for survivors at the Guatape reservoir where El Almirante ferry sank. A flotilla* of recreational boats and jet skis* rushed to the scene, pulling people from the boat as it went down and avoiding an even deadlier tragedy.

Dramatic videos circulating on social media show the turquoise* and yellow trimmed party boat rocking back and forth as people crawled down from a fourth-floor roof as it sank in a matter of minutes.

2. Shaking forces AirAsia plane to turn back

Passengers on board an AirAsia flight that was forced to return to Australia on Sunday were told by the captain to “say a prayer” after a problem reportedly with an engine made the plane shudder* like a “washing machine.”

The Kuala Lumpur-bound flight turned back to Perth one and a half hours into the journey due to a “technical issue” and the Airbus 330 landed about three hours after departure.

Passengers have been recounting the terrifying ordeal, which reportedly began with a bang from the left engine. Sophie Nicolas said the cabin crew’s reaction suggested the situation was “really bad.”

3. Bus-truck collision kills 12 in Argentina

At least 12 people were killed after a bus collided head-on* with a truck and turned over in Mendoza province in Argentina on Sunday, officials said.

The accident, which took place along a highway outside San Rafael, a town in western Mendoza province, also left at least 20 others injured.

4. Pakistan tanker fire kills 148

An overturned oil tanker burst into flames in Pakistan on Sunday, killing 148 people who had rushed to the scene of the highway accident to gather leaking fuel, an official said.

The death toll could rise further as another 50 people were still in critical condition, said Dr. Mohammad Baqar, a senior rescue official in the area. There were dozens of other injuries of varying degree, he said.

Local news channels showed black smoke billowing* skyward and horrific images of scores of burned bodies, as well as rescue officials speeding the injured to the hospital and army helicopters ferrying the wounded.

5. S. Korea’s Choi handed jail term

A South Korean court sentenced Choi Soon-sil, a longtime friend of ousted President Park Guen-hye, to three years in prison for bribery in the first of a string of criminal cases against her.

Seoul Central District Court on Friday found Choi guilty of obstruction* of duty by using her presidential ties to get her daughter admitted to Seoul’s prestigious Ewha Womans University and receive good grades.

Choi Kyung-hee, the former president of Ewha Womans University, and Namkung Gon, the university’s former head of admissions, were also jailed for two years and one and a half years respectively.

6. UN: Yemen cholera cases pass 200,000

The number of suspected cholera* cases in Yemen has now exceeded 200,000, the United Nations said on Saturday.

The joint statement by UNICEF and the World Health Organization said the country was now facing the worst cholera outbreak anywhere in the world.

The two U.N. agencies said they were doing everything they can to stop the outbreak from accelerating. So far more than 1,300 people have died — one quarter of them children — with the death toll expected to rise.
