Plants on karst landforms
    2017-07-27  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

China has the most widespread and diverse karst landforms of any country. These special landforms, which are the home to many different types of plants, are mainly distributed in southern and southwestern regions. To advocate for the protection of the vulnerable karst landforms along with their endemic plants, the Organizing Committee of the XIX International Botanical Congress has organized the “Charm of Vulnerability—Exhibition of Plants on Karst Landforms”, which started July 23 and has attracted much attention.

Influenced by the warm and humid climate of southern China as well as karst geology and geomorphology, karst landform areas create a variety of ecological niches, giving rise to their abundant flora.

The plants on display include about 150 species of Gesneriaceae, 30 species of Begonia and about 30 species of Pteridophytes.

The exhibition aims to raise awareness about the stony desertification of karst landforms in southern and southwestern China and Southeast Asia.

The exhibition, undertaken by Fairy Lake Botanical Garden, Shenzhen & the Chinese Academy of Sciences, is now open at the Orchid Hall on the fifth floor of the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center.

Gesneriaceae

Gesneriaceae is a medium-sized family which includes about 144 genera and 3,500 species. The species of Gesneriaceae are widely distributed in Asia, tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, southern Europe, Oceania, South America and tropical to temperate regions of Mexico. Gesneriaceae is abundant in China, with 42 genera and about 600 species. The species of Gesneriaceae are mainly distributed in southwestern China, the northern part of southern China, Hebei and southwestern Liaoning. The vast majority of species are found in karst habitats, in shade, moist areas of limestone jungle and the entrances to karst caves.

Begonia

Begonia is a large genus with about 1, 800 species. It is the fifth large genus among the world’s angiosperms. Begonia is widely distributed in Asia, Central and South America and tropical and subtropical regions of Africa.

Pteridophyte

Pteridophyte is a huge taxon of the plant kingdom. They are the most primitive vascular plants known at present. Most species of Pteridophyte are herbaceous and a few are trees. Currently, there are about 11,000 species of Pteridophyte on Earth.
