A public welfare activity, themed natural conservation in China, was held on July 23 during the period of XIX International Botanical Congress. Representatives from 10 of the best biodiversity conservation institutions, such as Alashan SEE Public Service Organization, the Birds, Insects and Wood Conservation Center and Mangrove Foundation, were invited to give speeches to the public.

Representatives shared stories about their efforts to protect the biodiversity of China, especially in southern and southwestern areas, from different angles including habitat protection and restoration, ecological compensation, wildlife monitoring, natural science and nature education and natural image recording.

As the largest primeval forest in Guangdong, Nanling enjoys the beauty of biodiversity. Rarely seen animals, such as the yellow bellied pheasant, parus spilonotus and red giant flying squirrel, are presented to audiences through the speaker’s interesting commentary. However, when the story came around to the suffering of those animals, people felt nothing but sorrow.

In 2011, Nanling National Nature Reserve encountered illegal road construction, so the Birds, Insects and Wood Conservation Center initiated a program to urgently protect the nature of Nanling.

Looking for the most beautiful tree is an activity initiated by Guangxi Biodiversity Research and Conservation Association to record the condition of trees. Countless stories about trees, in Yunnan, Guangxi and Guizhou, have left a deep and lasting impression on the speaker, who conveyed a vision for the promotion of harmonious coexistence between human beings and nature and the realization of sustainable development.

Bei-Le Chen, a department manager with Kadoorie Conservation China, gave a hilarious speech about efforts made by the whole community to protect barbodes.

After two years of education and investigation efforts, the project has won the support of the villagers.
