Buildings could generate their own power soon
    2017-08-23  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Homes of the future could be built with blocks that convert the sun’s rays into usable energy.

Renewable* energy experts are developing a pioneering new technology that is part of a growing trend of supplying buildings with their own energy, generated on site.

The blocks, called “Solar Squared,” are designed to fit seamlessly* into either new constructions or as part of renovations in existing properties*.

The team behind the blocks hopes to take them to market in 2018.

Solar Squared was created by researchers from the University of Exeter who specialize in building integrated photovoltaics* (BIPV). They are similar to existing glass blocks, which can replace traditional bricks to allow daylight into a property. Each block contains intelligent optics that focus the incoming solar radiation* onto small solar cells, enhancing the overall energy generated by each cell.

The electricity generated can be used to power the building, be stored in batteries or used to charge electric vehicles.

The team has created a startup* company Build Solar to market and produce the pioneering product.

It is thought that buildings consume more than 40 percent of the electricity produced across the globe.
