深圳学校开学季 各校呈现新面貌

Excitement, fear, anxiousness or joy, no matter what feelings you are holding, the new school year arrives in September. Schools and universities in Shenzhen welcomed students to start or continue their studies over the last two weeks with various kinds of activities.

Two new universities, Shenzhen Technology University and Shenzhen MSU-BIT University, both welcomed their first batch of students this month.

Shenzhen Technology University enrolled 226 bachelor students for its first year. The university now has three schools, namely the School of Internet and Big Data, School of Sino-German Intelligent Manufacturing and School of New Energy and New Materials.

According to Liu Hongwei, the director in charge of teaching affairs, all freshmen are required to learn German as a compulsory course for their first year at the university. The students will carry on with German learning at various levels when entering into their second year based on their majors. Courses will be taught in German after the students’ second year of study.

This university, greatly valuing cooperation with German universities, will send its students to universities and companies in Germany in order to learn the most cutting-edge manufacturing technologies.

A freshman named Yao Pengcheng inquired about the internship program in Germany as the first thing he did on registration day. Yao said he would try his best to learn the language and strive for the opportunity to work in Germany after graduation.

For Shenzhen MSU-BIT University, a tertiary education institution jointly built by Shenzhen Municipal Government, Beijing Institute of Technology and Moscow University, Russian will be the major language used to teach courses.

Currently, the university has opened four majors in international economy and trade, Russian, math and applied math as well as material science and engineering. All of the compulsory courses for third and fourth-year students will be taught in Russian. Professor Han Baoling, head of the admission office, said that over half of the teaching faculty was selected by Moscow University.

Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) has enrolled 1,005 new students this year, including 18 international students. Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, organized an inauguration ceremony on Sunday to celebrate around 1,300 students joining the university. The university also accepted nearly 50 international students for a record number since its establishment four years ago.

Meanwhile, a large number of public schools in Shenzhen also held an array of orientation activities to welcome their new students.

Houhai Primary School in Nanshan District distributed “school passports” for the first graders to start their adventure inside their campus. Dozens of parents volunteered to wait at 30 checkpoints for the school-age kids and helped them to explore different areas of the school.
