Children vote for their favorite books
    2017-11-08  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

全国322所学校共同票选出“最受欢迎童书”

The winners of the 2017 “China Resources & Cesbon Cup” Children’s Favorite Books Award were announced at Shenzhen Civic Center on October 29.

The gold, silver and bronze medals in the category of children’s literature were awarded to “Saving Prodigies,” “Ice Whale” and “Who Killed Henry the Hippo,” respectively. The top three places in the picture books category went to “Little Red Riding Hood out of the Woods,” “How a Princess Picks Her Nose” and “Finding Winnie: The True Story of the World’s Most Famous Bear,” respectively. The gold, silver and bronze medals in the popular science books category went to “Space Cat: Big Bang,” “Inquisitive Caston: A Philosophy Lesson About the World” and “Above and Underground: A Microscopic Look at Insects in Four Seasons,” respectively.

The winners were selected by children from 322 schools across the country via a lengthy voting period that lasted 300 days. During the process, children’s libraries and municipal libraries in 27 Chinese cities and provinces purchased some 90,000 copies of 30 recommended books for students before casting their votes.

The 30 recommended books were shortlisted — from 2,254 candidates nominated by 275 individuals and 121 institutions — by nine children’s educators and scholars from home and abroad.

Song Wei, curator of Shenzhen Children’s Library, believes that the ranking of children’s books should be determined by the children themselves. Additionally, “The selection provides children with a platform to think and express themselves and make decisions,” he said.

He also noted that children’s voices and needs should be communicated to libraries, publishers and the whole society.

The results show that books with interesting names received the highest number of votes. Of the top 30 nominated books, 12 were original works by Chinese authors, up 25 percent from last year. The results also show that boys prefer funny books like “How a Princess Picks Her Nose,” while girls favor well-woven stories with plot twists like “Ice Whale.” Geographically speaking, “Ice Whale” won the hearts of children from coastal cities like Shenzhen and cities in East China such as Yangzhou. Children from Inner Mongolia liked “Little Tuya Moves Home,” which tells the story of people from the grasslands, while Children from Fujian Province selected “How a Princess Picks Her Nose” as their favorite.

First launched in 2014, the award is the fourth session of the annual event.(Yang Mei)
