The 19th China Hi-Tech Fair (CHTF), which just dropped its curtain yesterday, witnessed tens of thousands of cutting-edge technological achievements on display at Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center. A handful of universities from Shenzhen and other places also showcased their latest innovative technologies during the week-long fair.

It has been a tradition for universities in Shenzhen to exhibit their technological achievements at this fair that has been regarded as the nation’s top technology fair. Comparing with fairs over the last few years, technologies brought by universities in Shenzhen are becoming more advanced and practical.

The Harbin Institute of Technology, Shenzhen showcased 15 technological projects in multiple fields including robots, new materials, new energy and advanced manufacturing, among others.

“Most of the projects showcased at our booth are very practical and even go into mass production,” said Zhang Qiutao, a faculty staff from the university’s technology section.

Shenzhen University (SZU) has followed its tradition of being the largest booth among all universities and showcased a total of 71 projects in intelligent safety, 3-D printing, robots, VR and so on.

“We have more projects with higher levels of technology this year, and at the same time are more practical,” a teacher from SZU’s technology department introduced. In particular, some projects in intelligent safety, health care and drones have already been industrialized.

According to a teacher from SZU, the CHTF has been serving as a window for the university to show its ever-growing strength in R&D. The figure of trade volume was not the goal and focus, said the teacher, because the university valued the opportunity to link its researchers with corporations, investors and markets for long-term cooperative relationships more.

Other local tertiary educational institutions like Shenzhen Polytechnic, Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Southern University of Science and Technology also displayed advanced technological projects developed by their researchers.

A seminar was jointly held among local universities, government departments and technology service institutions to discuss a path and development mode for the industrialization of the tech projects.

Besides local universities, exhibiting groups from other cities and even countries showcased projects. For instance, the Russian Federation Ministry of Education, Science and Technology had invited around 20 universities and research institutions to attend this year’s fair in Shenzhen. It was the ministry’s 18th time taking part in the hi-tech fair.
