‘Coco’ beats ‘Justice League’

over holiday weekend

Disney-pixar’s “Coco” handily won the Thanksgiving holiday box office over the second weekend of Warner Bros.-DC Entertainment’s “Justice League,” with US$71.2 million at 3,987 North American sites during the Wednesday-Sunday period.

Thriller shines at Golden Horse awards

Taiwanese director Yang Ya-che’s thriller “The Bold, the Corrupt, and the Beautiful” dominated the Golden Horse Film Awards, dubbed the Chinese Oscars, winning the coveted best film and two acting awards on Saturday.

The chilling drama about a wealthy family entangled in deadly political and business intrigues was also voted best film by audiences.

Hvorostovsky dies at 55

Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky has died after a long battle with cancer. He was 55.

Diagnozed with a brain tumor in 2015, Hvorostovsky had all but given up live performances. In June, the Vienna State Opera announced that he had canceled all upcoming appearances.

Jude Law to join Brie Larson in ‘Captain Marvel’

Jude Law is in negotiations to join Brie Larson in “Captain Marvel.”

Filmmaking duo Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who directed 2015’s “Mississippi Grind,” are helming the pic. The most recent draft for the 1990s-set feature comes from “Tomb Raider” writer Geneva Robertson-Dworet.
