30,000 RUNNERS DEFY CHILL TO JOIN MARATHON

WHILE many stayed in their warm and cozy homes on the cold winter morning yesterday, 30,000 runners were participating in the 2017 Shenzhen International Marathon. The first runner to cross the finish line was Peter Kimeli Some from Kenya, who finished the full-length marathon (42.195 kilometers) in 2 hours 14 minutes and 49 seconds.

The 28-year-old said he felt good after finishing the marathon and the cold weather was not a problem for him. In fact, Some said it was nice weather for a marathon because it was neither too hot nor too cold.

It is the first time Some has competed in the Shenzhen International Marathon, but it was not his first time in China. “I was in a marathon in Shanghai last month, but I did not finish it because I did not feel well,” said Some, who won the US$40,000 prize at yesterday’s marathon.

Some told the Shenzhen Daily that he had been training back in Kenya and would usually prepare for two to three months for a marathon. “We practice every morning and evening,” he said.

The second prize went to an Ethiopian contestant, Temesgen Gonfa Hirpha, who was only 0.2 seconds faster than the third place finisher, Kimaiyo Edwin Kangogo, who is also from Kenya. Hirpha was awarded US$15,000 while Kangogo received US$10,000.

For the female contestants, the first woman to cross the finish line was Viktoriia Poliudina from Kyrgyzstan. Her finishing time was 2 hours 33 minutes and 25 seconds, according to the organizer. Two Ethiopian women, Seyfu Mulu Seboka and Nigist Muluneh Desta, were the second and third finishers.

The first Chinese contestant to finish the full-length marathon was a 31-year-old man named Di Jun from Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province. It took him 2 hours 22 minutes and 2 seconds to finish the race, approximately eight minutes longer than the Kenyan winner.

Di is a businessman who started running marathons only two and a half years ago. He said the views along Shennan Boulevard were beautiful.

Gong Lihua was the first Chinese woman to cross the finish line. Gong, 24, is a professional athlete from Inner Mongolia. Gong said the low temperatures and strong winds had affected her performance. Gong finished with a time of 2 hours 50 minutes and 28 seconds.

Apart from the full-length marathon, there was also a half-length marathon and a 6-km race. While some took the event seriously and prepared for a long time, some contestants took the opportunity to enjoy the event with friends and family.

A special session was also added to the marathon. A total of 16 professional athletes from China were invited to run the full-length marathon as a relay race, with each athlete representing one city in China.

Chen Ding, the 20-km race walk champion in the 2012 London Olympics, represented Shenzhen as the first to run. The 16 athletes finished the marathon in 2 hours 6 minutes and 49 seconds.

The first Shenzhen International Marathon was held in 2013.
