“棋圣”聂卫平走进深中 指导学生下棋

Shenzhen Middle School had a heavyweight guest on December 18. Nie Weiping, a grandmaster of the board game Go oversaw students playing the game and instructed them in learning to play Go and bridge.

Nie became famous in the Go world after leading China to victory in the China-Japan supermatches, beating several top Japanese players including his teacher, Fujisawa Hideyuki. He earned the nickname “Steel Goalkeeper” for his ability to string together wins as the last Chinese player left. Nie won the prestigious Tianyuan match twice, in 1991 and 1992.

Students were very eager to meet the master in person and asked a lot of questions concerning Go, and through Nie’s answers they gained a full understanding of the value of Go and bridge.

Award-winning students Xiao Yudi, Wei Ruizhen, Liu Yulei and Liu Sike were among the students who benefited from the master’s instructions.

“Not bad! Keep going!” Nie encouraged the students. These few words made students feel thrilled, and they were impressed by the master’s amicable personality and skillfulness at the game. As a matter of fact, Shenzhen Middle School has yielded high-performing players in Go and bridge.

In April 2017, the school won the championship in the senior high school group of the city’s first Education Cup and the 12th Students Bridge Competition. In the 2017 Hongzhi Cup Guangdong Youth Bridge Tournament, contestants from Shenzhen Middle School earned first place in matches in both South-North Bridge and East-West Bridge, and the school won third place in the senior high school group.
