Natural remedies for the flu
    2017-12-29  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THE flu is an upper respiratory infection that affects the lungs, throat and nose of individuals. Flu symptoms can be very distressing for people, causing issues like fever, cough, sore throat, nasal congestion, aches and chills among others.

For many people, the flu may resolve on its own, but on occasion can cause complications. Therefore, it becomes important to treat flu symptoms in a timely manner since they can quickly lead to other health issues such as ear infections, pneumonia and bronchitis.

Here are some popular natural remedies to get relief from the annoying flu symptoms.

Hydration

Suffering from the flu can leave an individual feeling dehydrated especially if vomiting or diarrhea is also experienced. In these cases it is important to keep well hydrated so that the nasal and throat passages are kept moist. Water is of course, the ideal candidate in this situation, but can also be accompanied by fruit juices.

Humidify

Some research shows that flu germs survive and spread more easily in dry air conditions. Therefore, it is recommended to maintain indoor humidity levels during flu season. Using a humidifier can help achieve this.

Plus, inhaling moist air also eases nasal congestion and abates discomfort associated with a sore throat. One effective strategy is to take a hot shower inhaling steam or to use a steam vaporizer or a humidifier.

Gargling

Gargling with salt water helps get rid of the thick phlegm that collects at the back of the throat, especially after lying down. Gargling may also help unplug stuffy ears. To reduce throat irritation, use an astringent gargle prepared with honey and apple cider vinegar to treat the infected area.

Honey and lemon

Honey is a natural immune booster and is known to be very helpful in reducing the symptoms associated with the flu. Natural honey has antimicrobial and antibacterial properties that can speed up the recovery process for getting over flu symptoms.

Lemon is another food that has immune boosting properties and is an excellent source of vitamin C. It has long been used to treat flulike symptoms and seek relief from the viral infection. Honey and lemon are often used together as a remedy to treat flu symptoms.

Ginger

Ginger has long been a popular remedy for many health issues including the flu. The powerful anti-inflammatory properties as well as the warming nature of ginger help treat various symptoms of flu.

Prepare ginger tea by mixing a half teaspoon of grated ginger in a cup of hot water and let steep for 5 to 10 minutes. Add some honey and enjoy this tea a few times daily.

Rest

The body naturally feels drained of energy when suffering from the flu. At this time it makes sense to listen to the body if it is telling you to rest. Rest is also an effective way of supporting the body’s ability to fight infection. (SD-Agencies)
