柏朗思观澜湖学校迎来“绿色星期一” Windy Shao windysjf@hotmail.com Green Monday (GM), a global sustainability initiative designed to promote green lifestyle choices, joined hands with Bromsgrove School Mission Hills at a ceremony in Longhua District on Friday. It was the first time the global organization has cooperated with a primary school or pre-school on the Chinese mainland. This week, the organization started a project with the international school to provide the students and teachers with vegetarian food choices on Mondays. Established in 2012 in Hong Kong, GM is a social enterprise group that promotes green, healthy and sustainable living. Through its vegetarian promotion, it involves corporations, restaurants, schools and the general public in its efforts to reduce carbon emissions. GM cites references from the United Nations that the livestock industry and factory farming are the top contributors to worldwide greenhouse gases. Meat production also consumes a large amount of water and land resources. Not trying to convert people to vegetarianism overnight, GM persuades the public to start reducing their carbon footprint by giving up meat for just one day a week. GM will also hold other activities at the school to promote sustainable development, such as giving environmental protection speeches and holding exhibitions. The organization has cooperated with universities in 36 countries, including Columbia University, Washington University and UCLA in the United States, and Tsinghua University in China. |
