Thirty students at Kashgar University, in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region each received a scholarship of 5,000 yuan (US$ 774) from the Overseas Chinese Love Scholarship at the university on January 3. The scholarship, jointly set up by Shenzhen Overseas Chinese Charity Foundation and Shenzhen Returned Overseas Chinese and their related enterprises, sponsors ethnic minority students who are natives to Kashgar. In 2010, when the Central Government carried out a new round of work in support of Xinjiang’s development, Shenzhen was designated to offer one-on-one assistance to Kashgar City and Tushkurgan County. An assistance fund led by the Shenzhen government and sponsored by enterprises was established, involving all the public in helping the students. Various government arms including the United Front Department of Shenzhen Municipal Committee of the CPC, Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government and Shenzhen Overseas Chinese Association all play an active role in the charitable activity. Over the past five years, overseas Chinese in Shenzhen have donated money and materials totaling 3.63 million yuan. The Overseas Chinese Love Scholarship, set up in September 2016, is sponsoring 30 excellent students at Kashgar University each year totaling 150,000 yuan in scholarships. (Chen Xiaochun) |
