Shoot oneself in the foot 搬石头砸自己的脚

    2018-01-18  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A: John will soon be transferred to a subsidiary in the midwest where business is slow. What did he do?

B: He shot himself in the foot by saying too much to the press.

Note: The idiom means to “harm one’s own interests by ineptitude.” The original meaning of either accidentally shooting yourself in the foot with a gun or deliberately avoiding military combat by self inflicting a wound seems to have been lost or fogotten. Perhaps the idiom is coined to replace a much older saying which has become obsolete: hoist with one’s own petard. That saying, meaning “blown into the air by one’s own explosive device,” was from a line in Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.”
