Shenzhen school nominated for Zayed Future Energy Prize
    2018-01-24  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Shenzhen Yadi School recently made a history for being the first school in China to ever be nominated for the Zayed Future Energy Prize, as well as the first school in China to have ever been shortlisted.

Zayed Future Energy Prize is named after the late founding father and former president of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan, who championed environmental stewardship. This annual award celebrates achievements that reflect impact, innovation, long-term vision and leadership in renewable energy and sustainability.

The school’s submission, the solar-powered cleaning boat, stood out against a number of candidates from all over the globe and was listed among the top 16 finalists in the high school category.

The solar-powered cleaning boat uses electricity generated from the sun to store energy in a battery, which then drives the boat as it collects coastal trash. The student inventors plan to add an automatic trash collection system and a remote driving system in later phases of the project.

The boat has three purposes and advantages. First, it reduces coastal pollution; second, since the boat is solar powered, it does not emit carbon oxygen and does not leak oil; third, the boat’s construction materials such as its battery and prop stand can be reused.

“The idea came from our students. Our school once organized a trash collection and beach cleanup event to mark World Ocean Day. They were inspired by the activity and applied for a social practice project related to coastal cleanup and received huge support from our headmaster,” Jin Ting, director of the project, told the reporter.

The headmaster, Wang Jian, said, “Since the founding of Shenzhen Yadi School, we have taken full advantage of all kinds of resources provided by well-known enterprises, schools, the government and society in a bid to promote the development of our school. To strengthen the cooperation between schools and enterprises is the key to improving the quality of talent in all respects and to cultivating students’ innovation capabilities and awareness.”

He added that in the future the school campus will integrate new resources and energy-saving products made by nationally famous BYD, a major automobile manufacturer in China, and strive to build the school into a smart and environmentally friendly place of international class.

Shenzhen Yadi School is a private boarding school founded in 2003. It has 1,800 students. The school will partner with BYD, a previous ZFEP winner, to implement its project. About 50 percent of the school’s students are children of BYD employees.
