ON two consecutive days, Shenzhen University unveiled plans to build new hospitals. After announcing it would open a stomatological hospital in Bao’an District on Tuesday, the university said Wednesday that it had inked a framework agreement with the Shenshan (Shenzhen-Shanwei) Special Cooperation Zone to collaboratively build a hospital there.

The Shenshan Special Cooperation Zone is located between Shenzhen and Shanwei, a city to the east of Shenzhen, for the collaborative development of both cities. The Guangdong Provincial Government approved the establishment of the special cooperation zone in 2011.

On Wednesday morning, the university’s management leaders visited the special cooperation zone and attended a seminar with Chan Yaodong, director of the zone’s management committee. The two parties later signed the framework agreement on building a Shenzhen University affiliated hospital.

According to the initial agreement, the hospital is expected to become a comprehensive medical institution with both research and teaching functions.

The hospital will provide 2,000 ward beds with an outpatient building, an inpatient building, a teaching and research building, an administration building and even student dormitory buildings. Construction work on buildings providing 1,000 beds will be carried out in Phase 1.

The university and the special cooperation zone will make the final decisions on the Phase 2 buildings, which will provide the rest of the beds.

Temporarily named Shenzhen University Shenshan Hospital, the hospital will be affiliated with Shenzhen University as a nonprofit public medical institution.

Chan gave a brief introduction to the special cooperation zone and its blueprint. He said that the cooperation zone, which is still undergoing infrastructure development projects, will develop using the mode under which enterprises are headquartered in Shenzhen but have bases in the zone.

Li Qingquan, president of Shenzhen University, praised the rapid change of the zone. He said he thinks the area has a lot of development potential.

The president also disclosed that the university plans to build four affiliated hospitals, including the Shenzhen University Shenshan Hospital and 10 non-affiliated hospitals.
