Hong Kong police work on a building site where a World War II bomb was found in Wanchai district in downtown Hong Kong. The bomb was successfully defused at 1 p.m. yesterday. No casualties were reported. The 1,000-pound (453.5-kilogram) bomb was discovered by workers at the Sha Tin to Central rail link construction site Saturday. Hong Kong police began the bomb disposal work Saturday afternoon after evacuating about 1,500 people. It is believed to have been dropped by U.S. forces in the World War II, during the Japanese occupation of the islands sometime between 1941 and 1945.Hong Kong China News Agency |
