MA XINGRUI was re-elected Guangdong governor at the closing meeting of the annual session of the Guangdong provincial legislature in Guangzhou yesterday.

Born in 1959 in Yuncheng County, Shandong Province, Ma received a doctorate degree from Harbin Institute of Technology in 1988. From 2007 to 2013 he was general manager and Party secretary of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation. In March 2013, Ma was appointed director of China National Space Administration, director of China Atomic Energy Authority, director of the State Administration for Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, and vice minister of industry and information technology.

He was also the chief commander of the successful Chang’e 3 mission, China’s first lunar surface exploration.

He became deputy Party chief of Guangdong in November 2013 and Shenzhen Party chief in March 2015.

He left Shenzhen to take the post as acting Guangdong governor in December 2016 and governor later.
