A: I wonder how Mary keeps the enthusiasm to post selfies every other hour on social media. B: She must have selfitis. Note: The American Psychiatric Association (APA) officially confirmed what many people thought all along: Taking selfies can be a mental disorder. The APA made this classification during its annual board of directors meeting in Chicago in 2014. The disorder is called selfitis, and is defined as the obsessive compulsive desire to take photos of oneself and post them on social media as a way to make up for the lack of self-esteem and to fill a gap in intimacy. The suffix -itis, from Greek and often used to form words related to diseases, is also seen in “arthritis,” “meningtis” and “bronchitis.” |
