Bellflowers blossoming on mountain

    2018-February-14  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

BELLFLOWERS are blossoming on the southern foothills of the Wutong Mountain National Forest Park, the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported yesterday.

According to the report, the colorful bellflowers have studded the green hill like shining gems. Currently, there are about 50,000 wild bellflowers growing widespread across the mountain.

The park’s staffers conducted research on the mountain’s plant resources in 2015. They took various measures to foster the growth of bellflowers on the mountain for the next year, such as removing vines and weeds and spreading fertilizers. As a result, bellflowers grew prosperously on the mountain.

Bellflowers are often found on hills above an altitude of 400 meters and they usually blossom before or after the Spring Festival. A park staffer said bellflowers look like bells and the blossom of bellflowers symbolizes wealth and good luck in Chinese culture.

According to the report, fewer people go to the mountain to pick bellflowers nowadays as public awareness for environmental protection is growing in Shenzhen. The number of wild animals in the park is also climbing as the park’s environmental awareness has strengthened.

Additionally, the budding cherry flowers in the Mission Hills Sports and Eco Park in Longhua are expected to blossom soon. The park has launched a cherry flower festival for visitors.
