SHENZHEN TO PILOT SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

    2018-02-27  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THE State Council has approved the construction of innovation demonstration zones in Shenzhen, Taiyuan and Guilin, to implement China’s plan for the U.N. 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

According to the approval released Saturday, Shenzhen will build a national demonstration area around the theme of innovation-led sustainable development for Chinese megacities.

Taiyuan, in Shanxi Province, will focus on the transformation and upgrade of resource-based cities and the sustainable use of resources. Guilin, in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, will spotlight issues such as ecological restoration and environmental protection in the karst rocky desertification area.

The State Council requires Shenzhen to act in accordance with the requirements of China’s implementation plan of the 2030 sustainable development agenda to explore and form applicable, replicable and effective operation modes for the sustainable development of megacities in China through the implementation of a package of measures and engineering projects in sewage treatment, waste recycling, ecological restoration and application of artificial intelligence.

The city is required to coordinate various types of innovative resources, deepen institutional mechanism reform and provide practical experience for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The Guangdong government, as required by the State Council, is to establish a coordination mechanism and, based on the actual situation, give policy support to Shenzhen toward the implementation of related action plans and projects. The Ministry of Science and Technology will also give support to the pilot cities on key issues in the process of building sustainable demonstration zones.

China aims to establish around 10 national development zones to seek solutions to sustainable growth, according to a State Council plan released in December 2016.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is a blueprint for eradicating poverty worldwide by 2030. By piloting innovative projects in the development zones, China hopes to replicate success nationwide and offer Chinese solutions for other countries.

China has prioritized nine areas for the implementation of the 2030 agenda, including eradicating poverty and hunger, implementing innovation-driven development strategies and generating momentum for sustainable, healthy and stable economic growth.
