Creative winter vacation homework well-received by students
    2018-02-28  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Normally students across the country would spend their winter vacations writing compositions, solving complex math problems and memorizing English words — their student life basically carried over into the holiday. However, schools in Shenzhen have tried something different by giving students assignments closely related to their everyday lives.

This past recent winter vacation, seventh graders from Shenzhen Foreign Languages School became directors shooting their own homemade videos.

With two to four students per group, they were required to produce a five-minute video in English.

According to Wei Wei, head of the grade 7 English Class Office at the school, students were free to employ whatever shooting techniques when capturing footage on a topic of their choice. “We encouraged students to go to streets and interview expats in English. They needed to prepare five to 10 questions beforehand,” Wei said.

When assigning homework, Wei took the differing levels of students’ aptitude into account. Students who speak English at higher levels were asked to produce an English-language program; those less competent in English were advised to record and narrate their vacation activities in English as they were doing them, for example, while strolling through a flower market, passing New Year couplets or cleaning up the house.

Central China Normal University Affiliated Longgang High School also assigned students “vacation-friendly homework” for the holiday. Students in the 12th grade were required to choose a university they’d like to visit, conduct research online and compose a report about it. The school also helped 10th and 11th graders land an internship at their favored companies; then they were required to write a report based on the job description and salary system.

“I am a 12th grade student. This task is very important to me and I hope I can reach my goals after completing it,” a student surnamed Liu said.

Students of Yuanling Junior Middle School of Hongling Education Group became gourmets for their vacations. Their homework involved tasting specialty foods from different cities and learning to make them on their own and then making a Spring Festival-themed poster. “Students in Shenzhen are from all over the country and many of them go back to their hometowns during the Chinese New Year. I hope for them to learn how to cook their hometowns’ cuisines and learn about the folk culture behind the food,” teacher Tian Hui said.

The seventh grade students’ homework was hiking and finishing a geographical research report on the topography, landform, flora and fauna and climate of a certain city.

At Meishan Elementary School, students chose between traditional customs, idioms, English phrases and fun events related to the Spring Festival, using them to design playing cards. The assignment proved to be very popular among students.

Homework assigned to students of Biaoshang School in Bao’an District called for the concerted effort of students, teachers and parents.

According to Xu Cuihua, director of the experimental department, each student was required to work with their parents to draw up a daily timetable for doing housework and physical exercise every day. They could also watch a movie, collect current affairs news, make handicrafts or read a book.

When the new semester starts, the school will award stars of reading, writing, learning, working and fitness. (Yang Mei)
