This vacation, I read a book titled “The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry.” It is a warm and sincere novel. The novel tells of a bookshop in a Victorian cottage with faded signs on the porch that read, “No one is an island, every book is a world.” A. J. Fikry, who was nearly middle-aged, ran a bookstore on an isolated island. Good fortune never visited him. First his wife died, and then there was a robbery in the bookstore, with his only valuable book being stolen. His life had reached a stalemate and his heart had become an island. But then, a mysterious baby appeared at the bookstore, who became an unexpected rescuer for A. J. Fikry and a turning point in his life. The characters in the book helped each other out of trouble and their love for books and a good life went on and on. We feel lonely because we are afraid that we are not worthy to be loved. We are alone because we feel we are so independent that we don’t think we need to be loved. We don’t know when we will meet the people who will love us. However, nobody is living in the world by themselves, so they can’t choose to be alone. We should try to love everybody around us, so that they will love us back. This is the power and magic of love. This book shows me that loving and being loved and giving and receiving are important to our lives. It also makes me see how people are related to each other through love. We can say that “No one is an island, and we are living in a world with everybody loving others and being loved.” |
