They Both Die at the End
    2018-03-07  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

《最后一天》

On September 5, a little after midnight, Death-Cast calls Mateo Torrez and Rufus Emeterio to give them some bad news: They’re going to die that day.

The reader is dropped into a story in the near future where people are informed of their impending* death on the last day of their life. Society seems to accept this grisly advance without too much complaint. There are apps created to provide comfort and even a last friend to get you through this final day.

The story alternates* between the perspectives* of the two young men who have gotten the word and have now sought a friend from the Last Friend app. It turns out to be the best decision each has made in his entire life. For each, the new friend provides the courage and love the other needs. It is a gay relationship which is significant in some ways, but the desire for love transcends gender and could have played out in a heterosexual* relationship as well. There is never any expectation that there will be a happy ending. The title says it all. But there is a satisfaction in knowing they have found fulfillment.

Author Adam Silvera is the New York Times best-selling author of “More Happy Than Not” and “History Is All You Left Me.”

The book is available at online bookstores like jd.com.(SD-Agencies)
