High school students try out work life
    2018-03-07  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

深圳高中生寒假走出校园去“上班”

During the winter vacation, students from Shenzhen Second Foreign Languages School visited hotels, clinics, laboratories and fitness gyms to observe the work of the staff there for at least two days as a way to get an experience of different vocations.

This “real life work experience” assignment was a special task for the students from Shenzhen Second Foreign Languages School during the winter vacation. As one of the first trial high schools for the career education program, the school wishes to give students an opportunity to find inspiration for their career planning through first-hand experience.

The new comprehensive reform for the gaokao will start in September, and the importance of career education for students is a new priority. In July last year, the Educational Science Research Institute of Shenzhen selected 15 high schools as the first batch of trial schools for the career education program. The schools aimed to improve students’ career planning skills through course selection? and social practice.

Recently, He Pei from Class Two of Senior One of the school went to experience the daily work of a researcher in a laboratory at the College of Life Sciences and Oceanography at Shenzhen University.

Under the guidance of a staff member, He conducted an easy organic chemistry experiment involving micro-organisms.

“I used to think that a laboratory would be an interesting place with a lot of fun. But after experiencing it myself, I found that it’s more about rigor, and sometimes the job can become boring,” said He, adding that without the passion for science or the patience and rigor, it’s quite hard to stay and work in a laboratory.

Wang Zichuan from Class 13 of Senior One of the school went to a fitness center to observe the emerging vocation of private fitness instructor. Wang said that nowadays, people are paying more attention to their health, and keeping fit has become more of a priority, which has led to a demand for private fitness instructors.

According to Ren Jiayun, director of the school’s student affairs office, real life work experience is assigned by the school as a special task for the winter vacation.

As one of the first trial high schools for the career education program, the school has encouraged students to get in touch with different career fields to find inspiration for their future.
