Free lecture on HK drama
    2018-03-08  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Hong Kong film and stage director Clifton Ko will give a lecture on Hong Kong’s drama development in the past 20 years tonight at OCAT Shenzhen. Shenzhen Fat Bird Drama Troupe’s artistic director Yang Qian will host the talk. No sign-up is necessary.

Ko entered the Hong Kong TV and film industry in late 1970s. During that period he wrote John Woo’s comedy movie “Once a Thief.” In 1982 Ko entered Cinema City & Films Co. and directed his first film, “The Happy Ghost,” in 1984. The film series, like all his major works, is a slapstick comedy with a moral lesson, family values and optimism. His other comedies include family comedy series “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad World” (beginning in 1987), “Chicken and Duck Talk,” a collaboration with comedian/writer Michael Hui, ensemble comedy series “All’s Well, Ends Well” (beginning in 1992) and “It’s a Wonderful Life” (1994).

Since 1995, Ko moved to stage directing with productions such as “I Have a Date With Spring,” “The Vagina Monologues” and “Butterflies Are Free.” In May, Ko will present his new play “The Song of Everlasting Sorrow” starring Hong Kong stage queen Perry Chiu. Adapted from mainland writer Wang Anyi’s novel by the same name, the play follows a Shanghai woman’s several romances from 1945 to 1986.
