Students seek family roots in reports
    2018-03-14  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

家谱探源 二实学生完成寻“根”报告

We may often ask ourselves questions like “Who am I?” and “Where am I from?,” but have you ever thought about searching for those answers in your family tree?

A family tree not only records the bloodlines of a family, but also reflects the history and culture of a family.

During the winter vacation, the 10th graders from Shenzhen No. 2 Experimental School were asked to trace back their family roots and write a feedback report based on their findings. In total, the students completed nearly 400 reports in which they drew their family trees, collected family stories and listed changes that have taken place in their hometowns.

Once school was back in session, students elaborated on how they prepared for and conducted the project and shared their findings and feelings about the project with detailed materials and well-prepared powerpoint presentations. While sharing the stories of their family historys, students beamed with pride and audiences were impressed by their stories.

The students also listed changes to their hometowns in economy, culture, society and education, a task through which they gained a better understanding of their backgrounds.

Lu Jiang, headmaster at the school, said that the social practice enabled students to learn more than what they could learn from textbooks and nurtured their research abilities.

He hopes students will keep exploring, doing research and making a difference.

Shenzhen No. 2 Experimental School has always focused on educating students through social practice. The school also makes full use of Internet plus technology to innovate how social research is conducted.

For example, the school once joined hands with Tencent and developed a mini application called “Knowing Flowers” to conduct a project related to nature and ecology.

Students can open the app and take a picture of the plants and flowers around them to identify them. Through the app, students stepped out of the classroom and into the real world to gain multidisciplinary knowledge.
