Then, Emma took Diana back to the inn. While walking through the hall, Diana glanced and noticed the date on the calendar — June 28, 1778.

Lying down in bed, Diana could hear the woman’s breathing while she was sleeping. But Diana couldn’t sleep.

Today was June 28, 1778, which meant that tomorrow one of the most famous female spies during the American Revolution — Ann Bates — would execute her first task. She was dangerous to the U.S., and she could change the course of history. But she also didn’t know what would happen if she did change the history. Diana told herself again and again not to change the course of history or it may make it worse.

“Maybe I can just go there and make sure that everything is going OK,” Diana thought before closing her eyes with excitement and nervousness.

Diana woke up early the next day. She left a note for Emma and told her she had something necessary to do and would be back later. Then she went out quietly.

The sun had just risen, and the light made Diana feel warm. She felt like she was Joan of Arc and was going to do something great. The sunlight made her beautiful brown hair look orange, like a goodness born of the sun. There was a small blanket in her arms and some cigarettes in it. She wore a kerchief, pretending that she was a vendor.

She remembered that Ann went here first as a disloyal soldier but had failed.

The only thing Diana needed to do was find the soldier and make sure Ann wouldn’t see her.

It was her first time doing something like this, so she wasn’t trained, and if she failed, the worst case was that she would be caught and die. Her hands were shaking and sweating. But she felt excited; maybe she had never been that excited.

“Wow, cool! I am a spy now! Just like in the movies; I am a hero!,” she said to herself. She stayed behind a discarded cart and took a rest, but her eyes kept staring at the camp, looking for that woman — Ann Bates.
