More than 100 plant specimens found in Shenzhen are on display at Shenzhen Museum to raise awareness for environmental protection.

With detailed captions and photos, the exhibition is classified into four sections: endangered plants, invasive plants, wild fruit and poisonous plants. Provided by Fairy Lake Botanical Garden and Shenzhen Environmental Monitoring Center, the exhibited items include cycas fairylakea (仙湖苏铁), a national Class I protected species that can be found in Tanglang Mountain in Nanshan District, and alsophila spinulosa (桫椤), a national Class II protected species that has existed since the dinosaur age hundreds of millions of years ago.

Cibotium barometz (金毛狗), also known as the golden chicken fern or woolly fern, has a woolly rhizome like a golden retriever’s head, so in Chinese it is called “golden retriever.” The rhizome is thought to be useful as a cataplasm for stopping wounds from bleeding.

“Plants look identical at first glance, but from this exhibition, we see a rich and varied world of flora,” said Du Juan, vice curator of Shenzhen Museum.

The exhibition also features extremely poisonous plants in Shenzhen, such as gelsemium elegans (钩吻), strophanthus divaricatus (羊角拗), strychnos angustiflora (牛眼马钱), devil’s trumpet (datura metel, 洋金花) and upas tree (antiaris toxicaria, 见血封喉).

“There are 2,732 species of plants in Shenzhen, which is rich in plant diversity. The warm climate, stretching mountains, rivers, long coasts and government’s support in eco-construction provide a favorable habitat for plants,” said Wang Hui, head of Fairy Lake Botanical Garden’s specimen hall.

According to Wang, the scientists in the garden have been researching plant life in Shenzhen since 1988 and last year, they released “Flora of Shenzhen.” Currently, the garden has collected 130,000 specimens, including 70,000 native Shenzhen specimens.
