Madonna to Direct Michaela DePrince Biopic ‘Taking Flight’
    2018-03-16  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

MADONNA is set to direct the feature “Taking Flight,” based on the life of ballerina Michaela DePrince, for MGM.

The movie will be adapted by “Fresh off the Boat” writer Camilla Blackett from DePrince and Elaine DePrince’s memoir “Taking Flight: From War Orphan to Star Ballerina.” The story follows Michaela’s odyssey from her life as an orphan in war-torn Sierra Leone to world-famous ballerina. She is currently a soloist at the Dutch National Ballet.

“Michaela’s journey resonated with me deeply as both an artist and an activist who understands adversity,” Madonna said Tuesday in a statement. “We have a unique opportunity to shed light on Sierra Leone and let Michaela be the voice for all the orphaned children she grew up beside. I am honored to bring her story to life.”

Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton will produce for Alloy Entertainment, which worked with MGM on the YA adaptation “Everything, Everything” and the upcoming Yara Shahidi-starred “The Sun Is Also a Star.” Ben Pugh and Guy Oseary will also produce. Jonathan Glickman and Tabitha Shick will oversee the project on behalf of the studio.

“We could not be more thrilled that Madonna will bring this remarkable story to the big screen,” said Glickman. “There is no director better suited to tell Michaela’s journey with passion and sensitivity, and we cannot wait to bring this film to audiences all around the world.”

Madonna made her directorial debut with the 2008 comedy “Filth and Wisdom,” which she also co-wrote. She also helmed and co-wrote 2011’s “W.E.”(SD-Agencies)
