THE seven-day Pingshan Open, which was held from March 12 to yesterday at the Pingshan Tennis Center, has finally produced champions.

The famous Chinese tennis player, Zhang Ze, a wildcard entry, was beaten 4-6 and 2-6 by Belorussian Ilya Ivashka, who is now ranked 122nd in the world after pocketing the men’s singles title.

Ivashka also won a hard-fought battle with Zhang at the Qinghai Challenge last year. Although Zhang lost his second singles title, his profile has soared due to his good performance this week, pushing him up 53 places in the world rankings to number 252. “As more tennis games are held in China, and more top players participate, it creates a challenge and also pressure for Chinese players,” said Zhang. “My good performances at the Pingshan Open depended on the fact that I always keep training and positively adjusting my attitude to take on new challenges.”

Taiwanese Xie Zhengpeng and Australian Rameez Junaid won the doubles titles. Xie was the runner-up at the Pingshan Open men’s doubles challenge last year. This time, Xie and Junaid claimed the men’s doubles titles in straight-sets.

Russian Anna Kalinskaya and Slovakian Viktoria Kuzmova won the doubles titles Saturday. These two fantastic partners met for the first time in the singles final yesterday. Kuzmova knocked out Kalinskaya with a 7-5, 6-3 win. This trophy is the most important championship she has won so far in her career.

“It’s amazing that I won twice for the first time,” said the 19-year-old Kuzmova, who will be ranked among the top 100 after this win. “This is a relishing meeting as Anna is an excellent player.”

In order to get citizens to actively participate in tennis, there was a carnival held before the match yesterday, which featured a tennis court where visitors could experience the joys of the game, and a tennis photo wall.
