Did you know that American swimmer Michael Phelps, who has won a total of 28 Olympic gold medals, was bullied in school?

To raise awareness against bullying among students and help them to correctly deal with bullying, the Shenzhen (Nanshan) Concord College of Sino Canada (SCCSC)’s 7th Annual Bullying Awareness Week has been held this week from Monday through Friday.

Various events, such as an interactive fair, a film screening, and an essay competition on the topic of “respect,” have attracted a wave of active participants.

“Bullying is very common in school,” said Wendy Li, acting director of the SCCSC’s Personal Development Department. “Through this event we want to indicate clearly that SCCSC always has zero tolerance for bullying.”

Among these series of events, the interactive fair, which was held on Monday, was the most popular buzz event among students as it provided information about all aspects of bullying as well as respect and empathy in a fun and hands-on environment.

The “Take a Walk in Someone Else’s Shoes” booth, which let students literally walk in others’ shoes, taught empathy through metaphor, and the “Kindness Letter From Strangers” booth, which shared kindness to encourage strangers, were swarming with students.

Grade 10 student Ma Shiqi, who liked the “Kindness Letter From Strangers” booth the most, was surprised and touched as the letter she received from a stranger wished for her to go to a good university. “I appreciate this event because as students, especially those who are solitary, we can make new friends here.”

Grade 12 student Li Linfeng tried on a pair of shoes that belonged to an isolated classmate as he is fat and not doing well in English. After taking a walk, Li Linfeng felt unconfident and isolated.

“I will try to embrace my classmates with my advantage in English and encourage them to exercise more,” Li Linfeng said in a statement to tackle bullying. “Students here should feel safe because there is always someone who can help when bullying happens.”
