Regional FIRST Robotics Competition closes
    2018-03-21  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

国际机器人挑战赛深圳赛区落幕 优胜者将参加世锦赛

The 27th FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Shenzhen Regional ended on March 10 at the Shenzhen University Town Sports Center after two days of showdowns, signifying the successful closure of a world-class youth robotics competition.

After fierce competition, team 5453 of Shenzhen International High School United, team 5849 of Qingdao Laoshan United, and team 5883 from Poland stood out from a total of 35 high-school student teams from China, the United Kingdom, Turkey and Poland to move on to the championship rounds, which will be held from April 18 to 21 in Houston, the United States.

Teams that also earned the opportunity to compete in the championships include Rookie All-Star Award winner team 6952, President Award winner team 5883, Engineering Inspiration Award winner team 6304, and teams 5449 and 5522 who were given wild cards, as well as individual nominees for the Dean’s List Award winners Yin Hang from team 5823 of Shenzhen Futian Schools United and Zhang Yuchen from team 5449 of the High School Affiliated to Renmin University of China.

Runner-ups are team 5449 of the High School Affiliated to Renmin University of China, team 5522 of Shenzhen High School of Science and team 6941 of Shanghai Pinghe Bilingual School.

Yin Shifei, secretary-general of the China Urban Youth Robotics Alliance and one of the co-organizers of the FRC Shenzhen Regional, said, “The competition serves as a platform for international exchange for youth robotics education and offers Chinese teenagers with the opportunity to improve their scientific innovation capabilities so that they can grow with their counterparts in other countries. Although the competition was never held in China until recent years, I believe there will be more and more teenagers participating in the event and partaking in the charm of it.”

Shenzhen became the first city in Asia to host an FRC regional event last year, and another regional competition will be held in Shanghai later this year.

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was first launched in the United States in 1989 to inspire young people’s interest and participation in science and technology. It uses robotics as a vehicle for stimulating students’ desire to improve their hands-on skills and innovation capabilities.
