Wei Shiyu, Senior 2, Shenzhen Foreign Languages School Instructed by Daniel Fournier, ENREACH Education Shenzhen

深圳外国语高中部高二韦诗雨 指导老师:Daniel Fournier,深圳英锐教育

Some soldiers came out and noticed Diana, but just took her for a vendor. They bought cigarettes and smoked near her, talking about military strategy out loud as though Diana didn’t exist. Thus Diana got plenty of information in a few hours. She put that information together, observed most of the soldiers’ behaviors, and got an idea of what the disloyal soldier looked like.

Diana slowly became bored; she almost wanted to give up. At this time, another vendor-like woman showed up. There was no doubt that the woman was Ann. She immediately got up and followed her, acting just like any other vendor, but after Ann went past some soldiers she suspected, she suddenly knew who the soldier was. She walked faster and faster, but the soldiers kept coming up and asking her for cigarettes. Diana was no longer patient, however she had to pretend that she was just a vendor. But at this time, a soldier took her to a corner and said, “Who are you?”

“Mrs. Barnes,” Diana lied to him. She was sure that this tall soldier standing in front of her was the man Ann was looking for, so she answered with Ann’s pseudonym.

The soldier’s expression seemed friendlier. “Alright, I will give you the information. Then I will run away. I don’t want to fight anymore. Listen, I won’t be faithful to Washington but neither to England. Never, ever look for me.” Then he took out a pile of paper money and slipped it into her blanket.

There in was a small piece of paper with information on it. Diana gave him some cigarettes and went to another side of the camp, selling cigarettes to other soldiers until the man ran away. He walked slowly down the street, It seemed like he just left for a while and nobody paid attention to him. Only Diana knew that maybe he would not come back again.

On the way back, Diana saw Ann again. It was late afternoon, and Ann seemed very hurried. “Hello, lady, what’s wrong with you?”

Diana felt how good the taste of success was, so a thought came to her mind: she just wanted to tease the spy.

“No! Nothing, thank you. I am looking for my cousin, I have heard that he is also in the army. I just want to see him but I can’t find him… Oh, maybe you have seen him.” She described the appearance of that man. Diana wanted to smile but she couldn’t. “Oh, I just saw him. He said that he would follow the captain to the south tomorrow, so I guess that he must be preparing with other soldiers.”

Ann’s face turned white and then became red. “Oh… Oh… Well… I am proud of him… He, ahem, well, thank you.” Ann said and then ran away.

On the way back to the inn, Diana felt really relaxed.

She was imagining that she was greeted by many American citizens and that George Washington gave her a medal. “I am a hero! I saved history!

Well, I know that at last she also got plenty of information, but it is history.

America has won at last, hasn’t it?” Diana tried to persuade herself not to disturb Ann.

Then, she calmed down and sighed. Then she rose her head up, Emma was standing there.

“ Where did you go? I have been waiting for a long time!” Emma complained but she was still smiling. “Let’s go home.”

They got on to the carriage. “But if I don’t stop the soldier, will Ann meet him? If so, will history change? That is to say, have I really saved history?” She murmured.

“What are you talking about, Diana?” Emma asked.

“Nothing,” Diana gave her a smile. “Well, maybe I should try to get used to being a shepherdess,” Diana thought. She was so tired that she fell asleep on the carriage.

Not knowing how long it would take, Diana woke up, but she kept closing her eyes. “Why is it so quiet outside? And the seat is much softer than it was before.” She thought.

“Emma, where are we?” she said, opening her eyes. But she saw her own room. She saw her computer, her bed and all her personal possessions. She jumped down from her bed, went towards to the window and looked outside. There were no more small houses, only skyscrapers.

“Was it a dream?” She wondered. “But that seemed so real!”

Diana sat back on her bed, looking at her hands, “At least I was a hero in my dream, wasn’t I?” But to her surprise, she smelled the smell of tobacco. “Was that just a dream? Or… was it real?” Diana whispered and then went out. She noticed a small piece of paper lying under the bed.

It was the paper with the information.
