Twenty-seven students from Nanshan Chinese International College (NCIC) in Baishizhou have been selected by Shenzhen Museum as student tour guides after six months of training.

After passing an interview in September, the students received training in public speaking, exhibition design, history, wildlife, museum etiquette, relic protection, interpersonal communication and social responsibility, according to Du Juan, vice curator of Shenzhen Museum.

“These students are primary school third grade students, younger than our previous student tour guides. They are not only demonstrating their public speaking skills and museum knowledge but are also promoting a spirit of volunteerism in the community. This activity-based educational opportunity allows students learn in a relaxed way,” said Lan Jinren, headmaster of NCIC.

“When first starting training, I didn’t want to just recite too many of the exhibit’s descriptions, and I was so nervous to speak publicly that I almost gave up. But then my dad told me to take it as a way to grow and remember everyone who has helped me. Finally, after finishing the training, I’ve learned how to articulate, how to stand in front of visitors and how to adapt myself to circumstances,” said Fan Runze, a student of NCIC.

Since 2010, Shenzhen Museum has been training local student volunteers to give tours to the general public in an effort to attract more young visitors to the museum. The museum has trained three batches of NCIC students as tour guides.
