翻红
    2018-04-03  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

fānhóng Meaning:

“翻” means to “flip,” and “红” means “red.” This term, which can literally be translated as “flipping to red,” is often used by Chinese mainland stock investors to mean that the price of a certain stock or index reverses a falling trend and begins to rise, because on mainland markets the rising stocks are marked in red while those falling stocks are represented in green. Chinese netizens have also borrowed the term to refer to outdated celebrities, shows or games that have regained popularity.

Example:

A: 你听说过香港女星米雪吗?

Nǐ tīngshuō guò xiānggǎng nǚxīng mǐxuě ma?

Have you heard of a Hong Kong actress named Michelle Yim?

B: 不知道。

Bù zhīdào。

No idea.

A: 她最近在电影《无问西东》里演了一个角色,好评

无数,不知道能不能翻红。上世纪七、八十年代她可红了。

Tā zuìjìn zài diànyǐng 《wúwèn xīdōng 》lǐ yǎn le yīgè juésè,hǎopíng wúshù,bú zhīdào néngbùnéng fānhóng。Shàng shìjì qī、bāshí niándài tā kě hóng le。

She recently played a role in the movie “Forever Young,” which won her great acclaim. I wonder if she can become popular again. Back in the 1970s and 1980s, she was a household name.
