My cause for concern

The thing I am concerned about at the moment is the present situation of left-behind children in China.

Let me explain why. Our household cleaner has a son who used to be sensible and intelligent, who is the apple of her eye. But since she left her son and came to Shenzhen, the boy, lacking parental control, has gradually become a badly-behaved student. He has been caught fighting and stealing things several times. When his mom wants to talk to him, he just won’t listen.

According to All-China Women’s Federation (ACWF), there are 6.1 million left-behind children in China, mostly aged between 7 and 12. Short on love and care from parents, these children lead a poor life, which causes many social problems. Some of them even commit crimes, accounting for 70 percent of juvenile delinquency cases in China.

I have another concern as well. I am worried about their health and safety. My household cleaner’s son often falls ill for the lack of care.

Without enough money to get proper treatment, his health condition is going from bad to worse. Meanwhile, there is nobody who can guarantee his safety.

Statistics show that about 50,000 left-behind children die from accidents each year.

Finally, I hope that the government and society can provide more help for the left-behind children. They need love and care to grow up.
