Child born with cerebral palsy cured
    2018-04-11  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A 6-YEAR-OLD boy, who could not walk since birth, recently underwent a surgery at Shenzhen Children’s Hospital that gradually helped him restore muscle tension in his lower limbs.

The surgery was the first of its kind conducted in Guangdong Province, sznews.com reported.

The child, identified as Xiaolin, was a preemie and could not stand up or walk when he was already 1 and a half years old. His parents took him to a hospital where he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. His parents have brought Xiaolin to rehabilitation training over the years, but he made little progress.

According to the report, cerebral palsy is usually caused by encephalopathy and leads to movement disorders. Many children with cerebral palsy cannot practice basic movements with their own strength.

It wasn’t until Xiaolin’s parents took him to Shenzhen Children’s Hospital that life began to change for the child.

Chen Qian, head of the hospital’s neurosurgery department, conducted a surgery called a highly selective posterior rhizotomy (SPR), on Xiaolin, with the help of another expert from Tsinghua University.

The surgery requires more accuracy than the more commonly practiced SPR and deals with patients’ spinal nerves so as to adjust the patients’ muscle tension to a normal level, making it possible for them to regain the ability to move. (Zhang Qian)
