MV zhí

Meaning:

MV is short for “mate value,” and “值” literally means “value.” In a similar word form to the Chinese term “士多店” (“士多” means “store,” and the Chinese character “店” also means “store”), “MV值” simply means “mate value.” Derived from Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution and sexual selection, as well as the social exchange theory of relationships, mate value is defined as the sum of traits that are perceived as desirable in a potential spouse. That is, having a higher mate value means one is desirable to more individuals and so can afford to be more choosy in mate selection.

Example:

A: 上次和你一起参加义工活动的小姐姐很美啊，你对她不动心吗？

Shàngcì hé nǐ yīqǐ cānjiā yìgōng huódòng de xiǎojiějiě hěn měi a，nǐ duì tā bú dòngxīn ma？

The girl who was with you at the volunteer event is very beautiful. Haven’t you got a crush on her?

B: 她年轻貌美，家境优渥，MV值太高，我高攀不起啊。

Tā niánqīng màoměi，jiājìng yōuwò，MV zhí tài gāo, wǒ gāopān bùqǐ a。

She is young and pretty, also born in a wealthy family. She has such a high mate value that she’s far out of my league.
