Two students named Zhao Zhaoqing and Liu Ziyi stood out in the ninth National High School Students’ Japanese Speaking Contest in its Central and South China preliminaries held on April 21 in Shenzhen Foreign Language School (Longhua) high school campus and won the tickets to the national contest to be held in Beijing in May.

This year’s contest was themed “Magpie Festival.” It aims at stimulating the interest of Chinese students towards learning Japanese, improving their language skills and strengthening the friendship between China and Japan.

A total of 22 contestants coming from Sichuan, Hunan, Hubei and Guangdong provinces as well as Chongqing Municipality participated in the preliminaries, and five of them will move on to the national competition.

Ouyang Aixiao, executive president of the campus, gave an overview of SFLS’ history as an institute for language learning. Among the foreign languages taught at the school, Japanese has the longest-running history, having been in the curriculum since 1991.

Currently, there are 73 students in total learning Japanese ranging from grades Junior 1 to Senior 3 at the school.

The contest was first held in 2010. This year’s contest was held at the SFLS Longhua campus, also marking the first time the campus has organized a national contest.
