Chinese play ‘Two Dogs’ Opinions on Life’
    2018-05-11  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Chinese stage drama “Two Dogs’ Opinions on Life,” written and directed by Meng Jinghui, will be shown in Shenzhen. The show was an immediate success and has been performed for thousands of times since it debuted in 2006.

“Two Dogs’ Opinions on Life” tells the story of two dogs who leave their country home for life in the big city. But their search for happiness and the fulfillment of their dreams go less smoothly than they might have hoped. Once they arrive in the city, the two endure endless mocking and insults from their urban neighbors.

Director Meng said the idea of creating “Two Dogs’ Opinions on Life” was to reflect how normal people chase their dreams. “The two dogs, brothers Lai Fu and Wang Cai, are seeking material comforts while supported by the spirit of idealism,” Meng said. The two-hour performance requires the actors to make use of Chinese traditional opera and crosstalk arts, as well as Italian improvisation and French comedy.

Meng is the most influential experimental drama director with lofty fame in the Chinese drama circle. He puts his unique personalized creativity and diversified artistic style into full play. He not only writes a new chapter in contemporary Chinese drama, but also becomes a cultural phenomenon worthy of attention.

Works he has directed include “Accidental Death of an Anarchist,” “One Hundred Years of Solitude,” “Rhinoceros in Love,” “Head Without Tail,” “Amber,” “Mr. Donkey,” “Labyrinth” and “Magic Mountain,” all of which have triggered responses so strong that Chinese experimental drama has been thrust to new aesthetics heights.
