6 missing

SIX people went missing after a cargo ship sank in the sea area off East China’s Fujian Province, local authorities said yesterday.

Early yesterday morning, 11 crew members aboard the cargo ship fell into the water 1.8 nautical miles off the coast of Tangyu Island of Fuzhou City.

The local maritime search and rescue center received a report of the accident at 6:30 a.m.

23 on trial

A TOTAl of 23 defendants, including 15 Taiwan residents, stood trial at a court in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, on Tuesday in a cross-border telecom fraud case.

Prosecutors accused Taiwan resident Ye Qingshun of colluding with others to form two fraud groups in Malaysia from 2015 and swindling 44 mainland residents out of 7.86 million yuan (US$1.2 million) by pretending to be staff of telecommunications, police or procuratorial agencies.

According to a court statement, some of the suspects have been dealt with in separate cases.

Economic crimes

CHINESE police have cracked down on more than 90,000 economic crimes since 2017, recovering losses of 100 billion yuan (US$15.8 Billion), the Ministry of Public Security said Tuesday.

The ministry has launched an extensive crackdown on illegal fundraising, pyramid selling and underground banking, among other economic crimes.

In one of the 10 major cases made public by the ministry, police in central China’s Henan Province arrested 172 members of Shanxinhui, a Shenzhen-based company suspected of organizing and leading a pyramid scheme.
