AMID applause and wishes of good future, 271 students graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen yesterday as the university’s first batch of undergraduate alumni.

The 271 students arrived at the campus in Longgang District in 2014, just as the university was opened and had only a few buildings. Now the campus has 3,400 students in undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs.

The students were admitted to CUHK(SZ) with a dual evaluation system that takes into consideration a candidate’s gaokao (National College Entrance Exam) results and an independent exam designed by the university.

Myron Scholes, a Nobel laureate in economic sciences and a Distinguished Professor of CUHK(SZ), and Nobel Prize winner and Distinguished Professor Jean Tirole gave speeches at the graduation ceremony yesterday morning, encouraging the graduates to continue learning and exploring after stepping out of the campus.

The two Nobel laureates also presented Outstanding Graduate Awards to four students who had either won international prizes or stood out among their cohorts with pioneering projects.

Xu Yangsheng, president of CUHK(SZ), said that 65 percent of the graduating students will continue their studies at universities around the world and, on average, each student had obtained three offers from well-known colleges.

“The remaining 35 percent have chosen to work, and most of them will work in Shenzhen while others will move north to Beijing and Shanghai,” said Xu after the graduation ceremony.

Xu thanked the students and their parents for putting their trust in the university four years ago, and said that the university had made every effort to cultivate the students into responsible citizens with global visions.

An array of activities and exhibitions were organized on the campus to look back on the four years that the students and the university have been growing.

The CUHK(SZ) was jointly built by the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Shenzhen Municipal Government with the approval of the Ministry of Education.

The university has programs in science, engineering, economics, humanities and social sciences. Its long term goal is to recruit 11,000 domestic and international students, with 7,500 undergraduate students and 3,500 graduate and Ph. D students.
