Vaccines in short supply
    2018-05-22  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

FOLLOWING the news that Merck & Co. Inc. (MSD), the sole supplier of the HPV9 vaccine, has fully suspended the supply of the vaccine to Hong Kong, concerns over a shortage of HPV vaccines have once again been triggered, the Shenzhen Economic News reported yesterday.

According to a China Central Television report, the move will affect nearly 2 million mainland residents who have been inoculated in Hong Kong.

A Shenzhen resident surnamed Lin is one of them. Lin paid 6,600 yuan (US$1,033) to a medical agency in Hong Kong to get HPV9 vaccine injections this February. After receiving the first injection, she was scheduled to have the second injection June 7.

However, the announcement has disrupted her plan, as the second injection has been postponed until October. “I’ll be lucky if I get the second one in October. Right now, I only hope I can get all three injections within a year. If not, I’m going to lodge a complaint to Hong Kong’s consumer council,” said Lin resignedly.

It is not only HPV9 vaccines that are facing a shortage in Hong Kong, but also HPV4 vaccines in many provinces and cities. HPV4 vaccines were approved by the mainland in May last year.

Some respondents said they hadn’t received their first HVP4 vaccine injection nearly four months since they made the appointment in February.

Kang Zhiwei, head of a local medical service institution, said the company has stopped the service helping mainland residents get HPV9 vaccine injections in Hong Kong.

“Whether the current shortage can be alleviated is up to MSD’s source distribution. At present, we are trying to get some quotas from MSD to make sure that customers can get their second and third injections on time,” said Kang.

On the Chinese mainland, supply of HPV4 vaccines is also tense. A woman from Guangzhou said she had made a reservation at a community health center for the vaccine as early as February, but hadn’t received the first injection until recently.

A customer service staffer from a community health center said that first injections are not even available for those who made appointments in January. “It is expected that the earliest re-supply of HPV4 vaccines will be next year.”(Zhang Yu)
