The Mid-Autumn Festival
    2018-05-23  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the traditional Chinese festivals. It is celebrated on the 15th day of August in the Chinese lunar calendar, when the moon is full. The moon is the brightest and roundest on this day which symbolizes family reunion.

The origin of the Mid-Autumn Festival comes from a beautiful folklore. According to Chinese mythology, a woman named Chang’e stole the magic water of immortality from her husband, Houyi. Chang’e was so afraid that she drank the magic water. Then she flew to the moon never to return. She lived with the jade rabbit on the moon. It is a sad but sweet story, I think.

We also get to eat mooncakes on the Mid-Autumn Festival. There are many mooncakes filled with red beans, jujube paste, salted duck egg yolks and so on. I love eating the mooncakes with yolks from salted duck eggs very much. I hate the kind with different nuts and roasted pork.

I always look at the moon in the evening of the Mid-Autumn Festival.

The moon is more beautiful than at any other time. The full moon is a symbol of the wholeness and unity of a family.
