IN a housing estate in Xin’an Subdistrict, construction workers were operating a large excavator for the rainwater and sewage diversion pipe network project. Not far away, several workers were repairing the sidewalk where construction had just been completed. The construction of the rainwater and sewage diversion pipe network is currently in full swing in Bao’an District. It has been reported that the district will build 1,034 km of sewage pipe network this year, accounting for 44 percent of the city’s total. The diversion of rainwater and sewage is a project for the people. On the basis of the original drainage facilities, a new drainage system has been built to achieve separate discharges for rainwater and sewage. For residents, it will help reduce the overflow of sewage. By discharging the rainwater straight into the sea, the project will help avoid ponding during the flood season. Meanwhile, sewage is collected through the network and sent to the sewage treatment plant. It is then discharged back into the river after the water quality reaches the standard, thereby preventing the river from being polluted. With the district’s current drainage pipe network, the combined drainage system and overflow of sewage is one of the main reasons for the blackened and odorous rivers. In recent years, Bao’an has sped up the construction of the rainwater and sewage diversion pipe network, building 421 km and 890 km in 2016 and 2017, respectively. As of April 20, the district had built 117.2 km of pipelines. In addition, the sewage pipes of 2,650 housing estates in the district are also being renovated based on the original network. Rain leaders and storm sewers are being built to complete the network. This project, which aims to realize the diversion of rainwater and sewage for every building, is scheduled to be in full swing by June and completed by the end of the year.(Zhang Yu) |
