SHENZHEN will enter another period of heavy rain between Tuesday and Friday, although the impact of Typhoon Ewiniar, the first typhoon to make landfall in Guangdong Province this year, has ended.

Affected by a southwestern monsoon, the city will experience a new round of heavy rain this week after periods of sun and showers yesterday and today, Shenzhen Meteorological Observatory said Saturday.

Ewiniar, which was moving slowly at a speed of 10 kilometers per hour while making landfall three times on the Guangdong and Hainan coasts, seriously affected Shenzhen and other cities in the Pearl River Delta region, statistics showed.

In the three days from June 6 to 8, the city recorded its heaviest average daily rainfall since 2008 at 305.2 millimeters.

Yantian District recorded 432.5 millimeters of rainfall, the heaviest among all districts and new areas. The city’s 43 observatory stations reported force-7 gales and Yantian reported force-9 gale, which is 22 meters per second of sustained wind.

According to meteorologists, Ewiniar’s route was complicated, and it lasted for a long time, making it difficult to forecast.

The rainfall in June, which is often strong around the Dragon Boat Festival and is thus dubbed the dragon-boat rain, has already been stronger this year than in previous years, the observatory said. In some areas, daily rainfall is expected to reach or exceed 400 millimeters with hourly rainfall exceeding 100 millimeters.

A third round of rain is expected to arrive June 21 and 22, and a fourth round may arrive at the end of June.

The Dragon Boat Festival is on the fifth day of the fifth month on the Chinese lunar calendar and this year the festival falls on June 18.
