Bao’an firm supplies LED screens to World Cup
    2018-06-22  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

BAO’AN-BASED LED screen manufacturer Unilumin has provided LED screening solutions for the ongoing 2018 FIFA World Cup Russian at four main venues in Russia, namely Luzhniki Stadium, Kazan Sports Center, Mordovia Arena and Samara Arena, Bao’an Daily reported.

The company has provided comprehensive solutions for the four main venues with a total area of 4,510 square meters. Among them, Luzhniki Stadium, the largest stadium in Russia and the venue of the opening ceremony of the tournament, will host games of four groups, including the opening match, a 1/8 final, a semifinal and the final game.

According to Liu Yang, director of Unilumin’s sports division, the company has provided a 350-square-meter mega LED screen for Luzhniki Stadium. The screen features multiple functions such as live broadcasting, showing scores and players’ information, high-definition real-time slow motion replays, and running advertisements.

As the world’s top-class soccer tournament, the FIFA World Cup requires high-standard LED screens, said Liu. Both FIFA (International Football Federation) and UEFA (European Football Federation), the two major international football organizations, have tailored standards for LED screens and commissioned professional agencies to conduct rigorous tests.

What’s more special is that all of the tests are carried out in the actual venues rather than in a simulation environment at laboratories, which means that all of the screens produced by Unilumin have gone through field testing.

To meet the standards of the World Cup’s organizing committee, the Bao’an company has also provided various solutions for different venues. The city of Kazan, which houses the Kazan Sports Center, for example, has a climate known for low temperatures and high wind speeds. In order to overcome the local environment and achieve optimal display quality, Unilumin has adopted a highly permeable lightweight grid screen.

The company set up its sports division two years ago, said Liu, because of the company’s increasing industrial layout in the sports field on the one hand and because of the promising environment of the sports market on the other.

“Unilumin has already provided LED screen solutions for many major overseas international events, including the 2013 Kazan Universiade, the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics and the 2016 Brazil Olympics with outstanding performance. On this basis, Unilumin has also been exploring the sports industry markets,” said Liu.

“The prosperous development of international sports markets has brought many opportunities, while China’s focus and determination on the sports industry has also accelerated our march into sports.”

The biggest feature of the LED screens for sports venues is that it is not a simple display product, but a complete display solution. Therefore, sports projects are usually difficult and take a long time to deliver.

Unilumin’s annual R&D spending for the sports market is estimated to be around US$5 million. The company has managed to develop technology that ensures their screens will function smoothly even in cold and humid environments. Also, the company has integrated cutting-edge virtual inter-cut technology to win more sponsorship and advertising revenue for clubs and events.

The virtual inter-cut technology uses virtual means to turn the broadcast signal of live venues into another advertising sponsorship via broadcast signals, which means that the advertising screens at the stadiums may be displaying local brands’ advertisements, but audience members watching from home in different countries see different advertisements on their own televisions.(Zhang Qian)
