COMMERCE MINISTRY: US TARIFFS SET TO BACKFIRE
    2018-07-06  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THE threatened tariffs on goods from China will backfire on the United States if they take effect Friday, the Ministry of Commerce said Thursday.

Ministry spokesman Gao Feng made the remarks at a press conference when asked if China will slap new tariffs on some U.S. goods after the U.S. implements tariffs on Chinese imports worth US$34 billion Friday.

He said about 59 percent of the US$34 billion imports subject to U.S. tariffs are produced by foreign-invested enterprises in China.

“If the list takes effect, the U.S. will actually impose tariffs on both Chinese and foreign companies, including U.S. ones,” Gao said. “The U.S. is firing at not only the world, but also itself.”

Gao reiterated China is not eager to engage in a trade war, but will do so to firmly defend the interests of the country and its people.

The United States’ trade bullying by pressuring trading partners with tariff threats goes against the times, Gao said.

“China will not bow to threats or blackmailing, and our resolve to safeguard global free trade and the multilateral mechanism will not waver,” Gao said.

China will work with other countries to fight against the regressive tide of backward, outdated and inefficient protectionism and unilateralism, and will maintain a stable and predictable global economic and trade environment, Gao added.

China calls on all countries to take measures to oppose trade protectionism and support multilateralism, Gao added.

The General Administration of Customs said on the same day China will levy tariffs on U.S. goods, as soon as U.S. tariffs are in force.

On Wednesday, the Ministry of Finance said China will “absolutely not” fire the first shot in a trade war with the United States and will not be the first to levy tariffs.

The ministry’s comments came as certain foreign media, citing anonymous sources, said China’s tariffs on US$34 billion of U.S. goods would take effect from the beginning of the day Friday. Given the 12-hour time difference, that would have put its implementation ahead of Washington’s.

“The Chinese Government has stated its position many times. We absolutely will not fire the first shot and will not implement tariff measures ahead of the U.S. doing so,” the ministry said.

The trade spat between the world’s two largest economies has been in the spotlight for about three months, since U.S. President Donald Trump signed a presidential memorandum in March threatening tariffs on Chinese imports.

The U.S. said it would add tariffs on US$34 billion of Chinese imports Friday.
