Barca player Paulinho returns to CSL
    2018-07-10  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

PAULINHO has returned to the Chinese Super League, agreeing a move from Barcelona to Guangzhou Evergrande after less than a year in La Liga.

He will rejoin Guangzhou on an initial six-month loan, with a compulsory purchase option of 50 million Euros (US$58.7 million) from Dec. 31.

The midfielder was a surprise arrival at Camp Nou last summer, completing a switch towards the end of the transfer window following the sale of Neymar.

He made a bright start to life at Barca, however, and while his form dipped later on he formed a key part of the team that won a domestic double in 2017-18.

In total the Brazilian made 49 appearances for Barcelona, scoring nine goals and adding a further three assists in all competitions.

With the Catalans struggling to accommodate a host of non-European Union players, however, Paulinho has been released back to Guangzhou. “Welcome back,” Guangzhou wrote yesterday on their official website alongside a picture of the 29-year-old, who formed part of Brazil’s World Cup squad.

Barcelona also confirmed the sale, wishing Paulinho “the best of luck” for the future.

The player spent almost three years with the Chinese Super League club in his first spell, playing almost 100 games with the giants and lifting back-to-back CSL titles.

Paulinho’s exit will open up a spot for compatriot Arthur, who is set to join the Blaugrana from Gremio this summer.

Colombia’s Yerry Mina is another player whose future appears uncertain at Camp Nou, with interest from Everton arising for the central defender.

“The level of the Super League has improved year by year and the development prospects are very good,” Paulinho told Guangzhou’s website.

“After training in Evergrande and Barcelona, and following the Brazilian national team in the World Cup, I got a good experience. I chose to return to the Super League this time, hoping to bring more championships to Guangzhou and Guangzhou fans. I also hope to give the Super League more excitement!”

In his first spell in China, Paulinho played 84 games for Guangzhou after joining from Tottenham in 2015, contributing 22 goals and five assists.

After winning the league and cup double with Barcelona, Paulinho was an integral member of Brazil’s World Cup squad and played in all five of their matches, including the 2-1 defeat by Belgium in their quarterfinal tie Friday. Paulinho is the fourth Brazilian player at Guangzhou after Anderson Talisca joined from Benfica last month. Under Italian manager Fabio Cannavaro, Guangzhou now looks well placed to win its eighth consecutive Chinese Super League title. (SD-Agencies)
